Guided hourly tours starting at 11am we can customized tours for groups. The mine is a constant 50 degrees so it's warm in the winter and a great place to cool off in the summer. Instead of gold-panning, visitors "mine" an ore specimen from in the stope, we break them open to see the gold and silver. Visitors will learn about drilling, blasting and mucking and the importance of mining during the wild west. This continued operation preserved the mine site, its equipment and the original blacksmith shop. The mine has produced millions of dollars of gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper over the years and unlike most Colorado mines, the Capital Prize was never abandoned. The mine started by the Griffith brothers in 1867 to reach the major gold and silver of the mother load, Aetna vein at 3,200 feet. Walk into a stope and experience what it was like to work by candle light. See mining tunnels, gold veins, machinery and tools. The Capital Prize is an active mine and visitors will see a modern prospecting operation that includes dredges, sluice boxes, classifiers and shaker tables.įun for the whole family!
